Michelle Obama clearly had a goal in her speech tonight at the Democratic Convention. That goal was to fill in the blanks that so many Americans need filled in order to feel that Obama shares their hopes, their values, and their vision for a better America. That goal was evident in her speech because she fulfilled that goal admirably.
The Ted Kennedy speech had the audience in tears at times. If watchers respect Edward Kennedy, they will have found his speech relevant and moving. But, it was Michelle's speech that brought Obama's and her own history to the point of dispelling concerns about their American-ness. She captured their participation and endeavors to work for the American dream as most American voters aspire to in similar fashion. She shared with watchers their sound values for hard work and sacrifice, and an appreciation for those upon whose shoulders we all climb upon in raising ourselves up.
It was a speech with a goal. The goal was not to convert Republicans to Democrats, or bring prodigal independents back to the fold. The goal was simply to dispel doubts that she and Obama were not American enough, not like Americans enough, not sharing in the same experiences we common American folk experience. For those who listened with an open mind, their doubts were erased by this account of who she and Obama are, where they came from, and how they arrived at the Democratic Convention as nominees for President and First Lady.

Caught most of her speech. OK, she's a good mom. But, she's a lawyer, and that makes her not like me or folks like me who despise what lawyers have done to this government, this country, and its people. Bankrupting people as part of the deal of giving them a fair shake in court is not the American dream I was taught about.

Cool site, by the way. A lot of the political sites don't even give you the option to leave comments. Thanks.

I'm not a lawyer either, but there are many different varieties of lawyers, and they span the gamut of ideology, tactics, and who they represent. What evidence do you have that Michelle Obama has bankrupted anyone? There are a few plaintiffs who possibly deserve being bankrupted, though I agree that creating bankruptcy should not be the goal of civil suits. I suspect you've been reading anti-tort propaganda. Try this for a different perspective.Reply to this comment
